Caldaro at the Lake

The city of Caldaro has about 7,500 inhabitants. It is the home of the famous Lake Caldaro wine and a favourite resort for spring and late autumn.
This locality offers the possibility to take a holiday that is made to measure, choosing from long walks among the fruit orchards in flower and the variegated woods, bathing or surfing on the lake, cultural events and village festivities. Not to mention the excursions in the nearby Dolomites, shopping in Bolzano or going to the opera in Verona.
Caldaro is one of the most beautiful vacation resorts in South Tyrol and includes the wonderful opportunities for entertainment offered at Lake Caldaro. The village has a lively market and many surrounding suburbs, as well as the countryside dotted with vineyards.

Lake Caldaro and the biotope

You will discover the charm of the Mediterranean at the LIDO, where some go out in rowboats, some go sailing and some go out with a pedalo or dedicate themselves to surfing. But there are also peaceful places, sometimes interrupted by laughing children, who have found a paradise here. The four bathing stations of Gretl am See, Seegarten, Lido di Caldaro and Campi al Lago are open from mid May to the end of September.
The cane area on the southern shore of Lake Caldaro has been designated as a protected area.  An infinity of rare birds nest here and it is the abode of many swamp-dwelling animals. The swampy area is the only biotope of its kind between Resia Pass and Verona, and is situated at the fork of the most important migratory bird routes.
The fauna may be observed very well from a special tower, where there are also descriptions of almost all of the birds. As you walk along the nature itinerary, you can cross through the biotope and admire frogs and amphibians

The Mendola Cableway

Inaugurated in 1903, the Mendola Cableway is the first electrically operated rack railway of Tyrol and is also the steepest (64%) and longest in Europe. The itinerary to Mendola Pass is an experience in and of itself, starting with the breathtaking panorama over the Adige Valley and the Lower Atesina area!

The Provincial Museum of wine in Caldaro

The many objects displayed, including imposing wine presses, mugs, panniers, barrels and equipment for vinification, testify to the history and importance of wine in the region. The Museum also proposes curiosities about oenology.

The Spring Valley

On the slopes of Monte di Mezzo, between the village of Monticolo and Lago di Caldaro, lies the Spring Valley (Valle della Primavera - Frühlingstal), which is an area of particular botanical interest. The geographical name of this itinerary is actually Valle Fabiòn. In this valley, which is sunny and protected from the wind, spring starts earlier than elsewhere.
